New England Oral & Cosmetic Facial Surgery Has RE-OPENED!

We are as relieved as all of you that the curve has been able to flatten in our province enough to start the return to regular life, one step at a time, thanks to social distancing and stay-at-home efforts. As you may have heard, the BC Government has given the green light for clinics to resume work. We are pleased to announce that we are NOW OPEN!

So, how is that going to look in terms of our oral and cosmetic facial surgery services?

Patients can expect pre-appointment telephone screening regarding Covid-19 symptoms. If anyone is feeling unwell or displaying symptoms, they will be kindly asked to wait until they are healthy, as not to put any staff or other patients at potential risk.

We will also stagger appointments to have minimal people at the clinic at any given time, as well as to keep the waiting room as sparse as possible.

Patients who need urgent treatment for dental implants or cosmetic facial procedures will be prioritized.  As you can imagine, there will be somewhat of a backlog, as we have been closed since the shutdown in March.

Plexiglass shields will be placed between administrative staff and patients for checking-in and payments. Patients will also have the option to pay by phone for limited interaction.

Our team will be working hard to ensure that we continue to exceed industry standards in health and safety.

Please call us at New England Oral & Cosmetic Facial Surgery with any questions you may have or to pre-book your appointment at 604-507-0514.

We look forward to seeing you in-person again soon!

The Aging Process from Your 20’s to Senior Years

When you’re in your twenties, you tend to think you’re invincible. The thought of getting older doesn’t really cross your mind. You indulge in drinking, smoking, and lots of sunbathing, all of which can start to take a toll on your skin.

Things to focus on in your twenties:

• Have a daily skin care routine for morning and night with quality products.
• Always wear sunblock, regardless of the weather. Just because it may be cloudy, doesn’t mean that you aren’t still being harmed by UV rays.
• Limit alcohol consumption
• Quit smoking
• Consider Botox and skin resurfacing in your later 20’s – it pays to be proactive!

In your thirties and for the remainder of your life, you want to focus on the same preventative measures as you did in your twenties, but the fact of the matter is, you’ll be faced with more stress and your skin will start losing collagen and elastin. You’ll notice more fine lines and other visible signs of aging. This is the age range where Botox, dermal fillers, and laser treatments start to become a necessity.

In your forties and fifties, you will start to notice a much greater change in appearance, especially if you have not proceeded with any type of cosmetic facial procedures. Your face loses volume, your skin will sag more, you’ll have to work extra hard in the gym to tighten up parts of your body, and your eyes and temples may appear more sunken. This is the best time to consider surgical procedures, not to completely change your look, but to make you look like a better version of your existing self. More refreshed and youthful with a confident glow!

As you enter the senior years (60+), you’ll have the same issues as your forties and fifties…they’ll just be more prominent. This is when more invasive surgical techniques will be required to make an impact.
The more you know about the aging process, the better off you’ll be, both in terms of aging gracefully, as well as seeking out certain procedures that can shed years off of your face. When considering any type of surgical procedure, ensure you are visiting a surgeon who is reputable and board-certified. They know all of the procedures inside-out, so they will recommend whatever is best to achieve your desired results.

Don’t fear aging. Fear not taking care of yourself to look and feel your very best throughout your life!

12 Tips to Protect Your Skin in the Fall & Winter

Many people think that when the season changes from summer to fall and then winter, your skin isn’t at risk like when it’s 20+ degrees outside. When it’s cloudy, raining, foggy, or snowing, the thought of putting sunscreen on can fall by the wayside.  The truth of the matter is that you don’t just need to use sunscreen when it is sunny – you need to use it year-round in all types of weather. It has to become part of your daily routine.  UV rays do not discriminate – they’re always there.  Read more about sunscreen on our blog: What You Need to Know About Sunscreen.

So now that you know all about sunscreen, we’re going to give you more great tips for keeping your skin feeling soft, glowing, and comfortable during the colder months.

Your skin may feel more dry because of less humidity in the air and also because of the heat in your home, which tends to strip the air of moisture. Excessively dry skin can end up cracking and bleeding. In addition to slathering on more moisturizer and lotion, however, there are other things you can do to prevent this from happening as well as stop it from chapping, itching, getting red.

  1. Moisturize immediately after you wash your face or get out of the shower or bath. This will help seal the dampness into your skin.
  2. Use lukewarm water to wash when possible (especially your hands and face) to help prevent the oils from being stripped from your skin.
  3. Protect exposed skin with scarves and mitts.
  4. Use moisturizer that is oil-based vs. water based to help retain moisture.
  5. If you have sensitive skin, it will be even more sensitive in the winter. Use mild cleansers and moisturizers. Avoid scented products, as they may end up irritating your skin.
  6. Exfoliate your face and body to ensure that dead skin is not blocking the moisturizer from getting absorbed.
  7. Use a toner and serum to seal in your moisturizer.
  8. Put on night cream before you go to bed.
  9. Use hydrating face masks – you can even make your own at home – Google for recipes!
  10. Invest in a humidifier for your home to put moisture back into the air.
  11. Eat foods high in water content, zinc, vitamin C, and omega-3’s.
  12. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. You may be tempted to want to only consume hot drinks, but be sure to drink plenty of water.
