Have You Heard of Bone Grafting?

People get bone grafting when they don’t have enough jawbone volume needed to support dental implants.

Why may some people experience loss of jawbone volume?

Reasons include:

  • Tooth removal
  • Gum disease
  • Some type of dental of physical injury

And not only do they need to have enough jawbone … it also needs to be placed in the right location and be of the proper height and width.

With bone grafting, you can:

  • Limit or prevent bone recession
  • Stabilize and help restore the foundation of your jaw
  • Correct deformities
  • Restructure the bone to gain added support

So as you can see, your dreams of natural looking teeth via dental implants can still be a reality if lack of jawbone volume!  Call us to book a consultation and be one step closer to smiling with confidence.

5 Reasons to Get Dental Implants

Are you insecure about your smile? Do you have damaged or missing teeth?  Dental implants may be the perfect solution for you!

Why are dental implants a great choice?

(1) They are made to match your natural teeth. No one would even know you have dental implants!

(2) They feel, fit, and function like real teeth.  Plus, they’re super strong and durable.

(3) They will not interfere with the shape of your face, jawline, or smile.

(4) They’re always in place, unlike dentures that can fall out or get loose.

(5) You cannot get cavities in them.

Overall, oral implants will renew your confidence and make you feel great.

Why You Don’t Have to be Fearful of Dental Implant Surgery

The thought of dental implants can seem overwhelming, but in the big scheme of things, it’s a fairly minor procedure. This is partly because everything is mapped out ahead of time. There are no “unknowns”.

Worried about getting anesthesia? Don’t be. Dental implant surgery can be done with local anesthesia, meaning the surgeon numbs the site where the implant is placed, as well as the surrounding tissues. Therefore, you don’t have to stress about getting put to sleep. You’ll be awake, but very comfortable, and aware as to what is going on.

Does the thought of it still make you feel extra anxious? Your surgeon can also provide you with an anti- anxiety or sedative medication to ease your nerves.

Fearful of the pain AFTER the procedure is complete? Some people may require a more intense pain reliever, but you’ll be pleased to hear that most people find aspirin or ibuprofen to be sufficient for the discomfort.

Your implant sites will heal quite quickly, with a very high success rate. Then it’s just a few weeks for the bone integration to take place before your surgeon attaches the crown, and you’ll be set for several years with a strong, confident, and beautiful smile. Sounds pretty amazing, right?!

Do Dental Implants Get Sensitive to Hot & Cold?

People may suffer from sensitive teeth if their roots are exposed due to gum recession. It goes without saying that dealing with sensitive teeth can be rather bothersome and uncomfortable. They may even restrict you from eating and drinking whatever you like.

If you have struggled with the inconvenience of sensitivity in the past, it makes sense that you may be concerned that the same issue would arise with dental implants. We have good news though! As dental implants do not have roots that can be exposed, you would not encounter this problem.

That said though, if you were to have some type of cosmetic or restorative procedures, you may experience temporary sensitivity in your mouth. This is because your gums and nerve tissues may be affected. Luckily, this will likely go away within a week or two.

New England Oral & Cosmetic Facial Surgery Has RE-OPENED!

We are as relieved as all of you that the curve has been able to flatten in our province enough to start the return to regular life, one step at a time, thanks to social distancing and stay-at-home efforts. As you may have heard, the BC Government has given the green light for clinics to resume work. We are pleased to announce that we are NOW OPEN!

So, how is that going to look in terms of our oral and cosmetic facial surgery services?

Patients can expect pre-appointment telephone screening regarding Covid-19 symptoms. If anyone is feeling unwell or displaying symptoms, they will be kindly asked to wait until they are healthy, as not to put any staff or other patients at potential risk.

We will also stagger appointments to have minimal people at the clinic at any given time, as well as to keep the waiting room as sparse as possible.

Patients who need urgent treatment for dental implants or cosmetic facial procedures will be prioritized.  As you can imagine, there will be somewhat of a backlog, as we have been closed since the shutdown in March.

Plexiglass shields will be placed between administrative staff and patients for checking-in and payments. Patients will also have the option to pay by phone for limited interaction.

Our team will be working hard to ensure that we continue to exceed industry standards in health and safety.

Please call us at New England Oral & Cosmetic Facial Surgery with any questions you may have or to pre-book your appointment at 604-507-0514.

We look forward to seeing you in-person again soon!

The Difference Between Seeing Your Dentist & An Oral Surgeon

So, you need to get a procedure done and some people may tell you to just go to your dentist, while others may tell you to go to an oral surgeon. Here’s the difference:

The main scope of work for General Dentists includes:

  • Oral exams
  • Teeth cleanings
  • Sealants
  • Crowns
  • Fillings
  • Root canals
  • Gum care

Your dentist may also perform minor surgical procedures, tooth extractions, and dental implants.

When it comes to oral surgeons, they usually have extensive training in one or more particular areas. The main scope of work for Oral Surgeons includes:

  • Dental implants
  • Tooth extraction, including impacted teeth
  • Abscessed teeth
  • Traumatic injury
  • Restructuring of bone and gum tissue
  • Jaw misalignment
  • Bone loss
  • Chronic diseases or conditions of the mouth
  • Oral cancer and removal of tumors

Some oral and maxillofacial surgeons will require referrals for all patients, which you would get from either your dentist or doctor. Exceptions may be able to be made for emergencies.

For more information about your specific situation, call your dentist or nearby oral surgeon’s office. For oral surgery in Surrey, call us at New England Oral & Cosmetic Facial Surgery: 604-507-0514.

Concerned About the Cost of Dental Implants?

Dental implants are the number one choice for teeth replacement because they look and feel like real teeth. However, since they are the best solution, they are also the most costly option. Many people don’t even consider dental implants because they think they won’t be able to afford them.

The thing is though, you won’t really know how much implants will cost you until you make an appointment with your local oral surgeon. It could be a lot less than you may be assuming it to be. Cost varies depending on location of the missing teeth, the number of dental implants needed, and if any other services are required for the dental implants to be placed in your mouth, such as bone grafting. Plus, you have to take into account that they are fully customized based on your mouth.

Dental implants won’t put you at any risk of embarrassment during social interactions, unlike dentures which can slip or even affect your speech. Implants are securely anchored into your jawbone. They are also easy to clean and do not accumulate food particles.

The benefits of dental implants are endless, so it’s definitely worth booking a consultation so that you know for sure how much the cost would be. You could consider financing as well.

Can you really put a price tag on a better quality of life and having your confidence back? We don’t think so.

Can I Get Dental Implants?

Well, this is an easy answer. Basically, if you are over 18 and have lost a tooth or several teeth, chances are high that you can be a candidate for dental implants. The reason we say you should be over 18 is because your bone tissue is not fully developed and your jaw is still growing.

That said, you do need to be in good general health, just like with any type of surgical procedure. This includes not having periodontal disease or tooth decay. Plus, you would absolutely need to take care of any oral health issues before a dental surgeon would even consider giving you implants.

Other health issues that may prevent you from getting dental implants include:

  • Blood clotting disorders
  • Uncontrolled diabetes
  • Immune system problems
  • Cancer
  • Drug abuse

You would need to discuss all health issues and concerns with your doctor and dental surgeon to confirm 100% whether or not you are a candidate.

Lastly, if you are a smoker, it goes without saying that smoking is bad for your overall health. When it comes to implants specifically, it could really slow down your healing. Smoking is also not good for the ongoing health of your gums and bone structure. The moral of the story is this: if you want a healthy mouth and a successful dental implant surgery, stop smoking, period.
