Are You Worried About The Thought of Getting Dental Implants?

So, you’re worried about getting dental implants? Sure, the idea of getting dental implants can seem overwhelming, but let us assure you that it’s a pretty minor procedure. Everything is mapped out ahead of time, all of your questions are answered, and you will be in the hands of a professional dental surgeon.

People often get anxiety thinking about the pain level, but your surgeon will numb the area with local anesthesia. That means that you will be awake, comfortable, and aware, without having to worry about being put to sleep. You can also ask your surgeon for an anti-anxiety pill or sedative to help you feel calm.

You don’t have to stress about the pain after the oral implant surgery is complete because most people find ibuprofen or aspirin to be adequate for managing any discomfort.

Dental implant sites heal quickly and successfully. A few weeks after your surgery date, your bone integration will take place, your surgeon will attach the crown, and then you’ll be set with the dream smile you always wanted!

Not Enough Jawbone Volume to Get Dental Implants?

As you know, there is no better solution for missing teeth than dental implants. They replace your missing roots and support the artificial teeth. This results in having the closest possible thing to real teeth.

However, in order for your dental surgeon to be able to provide you with dental implants, you need to have enough jawbone to support them. This adequate amount of jawbone needs to be in the right location, and of proper width and height.

Why don’t some people have enough jawbone?

  • Injury – if you have suffered with an infection or a blow to your jaw, it can cause your bone to recede
  • A bad case of periodontal disease (gum disease) – this can permanently damage your and lead to instability of the teeth
  • Tooth removal – if you have had teeth extracted, you may have lost bone in this area…also known as a “bone defect”

Good news! There is a solution!

The solution is called “bone grafting”. This procedure restores your receded or damaged jawbone by increasing the height and width of your jawbone. Basically, it fills in the voids and defects in your bone.

    What does bone grafting do?

  • Corrects deformities
  • Stabilizes and helps restore the foundation of the jaw
  • Restructures your bone to provide added support
  • Limits or prevents bone recession

Concerned About the Cost of Dental Implants?

Dental implants are the number one choice for teeth replacement because they look and feel like real teeth. However, since they are the best solution, they are also the most costly option. Many people don’t even consider dental implants because they think they won’t be able to afford them.

The thing is though, you won’t really know how much implants will cost you until you make an appointment with your local oral surgeon. It could be a lot less than you may be assuming it to be. Cost varies depending on location of the missing teeth, the number of dental implants needed, and if any other services are required for the dental implants to be placed in your mouth, such as bone grafting. Plus, you have to take into account that they are fully customized based on your mouth.

Dental implants won’t put you at any risk of embarrassment during social interactions, unlike dentures which can slip or even affect your speech. Implants are securely anchored into your jawbone. They are also easy to clean and do not accumulate food particles.

The benefits of dental implants are endless, so it’s definitely worth booking a consultation so that you know for sure how much the cost would be. You could consider financing as well.

Can you really put a price tag on a better quality of life and having your confidence back? We don’t think so.

Can I Get Dental Implants?

Well, this is an easy answer. Basically, if you are over 18 and have lost a tooth or several teeth, chances are high that you can be a candidate for dental implants. The reason we say you should be over 18 is because your bone tissue is not fully developed and your jaw is still growing.

That said, you do need to be in good general health, just like with any type of surgical procedure. This includes not having periodontal disease or tooth decay. Plus, you would absolutely need to take care of any oral health issues before a dental surgeon would even consider giving you implants.

Other health issues that may prevent you from getting dental implants include:

  • Blood clotting disorders
  • Uncontrolled diabetes
  • Immune system problems
  • Cancer
  • Drug abuse

You would need to discuss all health issues and concerns with your doctor and dental surgeon to confirm 100% whether or not you are a candidate.

Lastly, if you are a smoker, it goes without saying that smoking is bad for your overall health. When it comes to implants specifically, it could really slow down your healing. Smoking is also not good for the ongoing health of your gums and bone structure. The moral of the story is this: if you want a healthy mouth and a successful dental implant surgery, stop smoking, period.

Do Dental Implants Stain?

One of the key benefits of dental implants is that you don’t have to worry about getting cavities. You still need to care for them like real teeth though, of course, brushing and flossing twice a day.

But what about staining?

Staining can happen if the glazed finish on your implants wears off for some reason. It is a good idea to avoid toothpaste that contains ingredients such as silica or baking soda, as these can be abrasive to the implants. Even on natural teeth, overtime, there is a risk that they will strip your tooth enamel.

You could also have staining along your gumline, which is why it is important for to visit your dentist for regular dental cleanings so that they can clean and polish this area.

And also with natural teeth, you’ll be better off if you avoid certain food and drink such as red wine, coffee, tea, berries, and cola. Plus, it goes without saying that you should steer clear of smoking and chewing tobacco, not only for staining issues, but for your overall health and well-being.

Common Questions About Dental Implants

Considering dental implants? Here are the answers to some common questions…

How did dental implants come to be?

Dental implants came to be when a scientist discovered that bone would naturally bond to titanium.

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are titanium cylinders that are permanently placed in the jaw bone, providing support for the replaced teeth. The bone grows around the implants and bonds with them as if they were bone. The titanium part is not visible. The part that is visible is the prosthetic tooth.

What is the prosthetic teeth made of?

The prosthetic teeth are made of porcelain.

What color are the prosthetic teeth?

Prosthetic teeth are custom-made for you, so they are color-matched to your existing teeth. This is great because then you don’t have to worry about the prosthetic teeth standing out

What is the biggest benefit of dental implants?

The biggest benefit of having dental implants is that once they are in, they function and feel like regular teeth. Unlike dentures, you don’t have to remove them and they don’t shift around.

Will people be able to tell that I have dental implants?

No, people will not be able to notice that you have dental implants. The only way they would know is if you tell them.

Can I chew gum with dental implants?

Yes! You can chew gum just like with natural teeth. The gum will not stick to the implants.

Will I be in any pain during dental implant surgery?

You don’t have to worry about being in any pain during the surgical procedure of getting implants because anesthetic will be used. Your oral surgeon’s main priority is making your experience as comfortable as possible.

What can I expect right after my oral surgery for dental implants?

As with any surgery, there is recovery time and your mouth will need to heal. You can expect to feel sore and some discomfort.

Am I at risk for breakage with dental implants?

Just like with your regular teeth, you need to take precautions. If you chew ice, bite hard candies, or random objects like pens, yes, you could risk breaking them. Treat them as you would regular teeth, and you don’t have to worry.

Can dental implants stain?

Yes, dental implants can stain just like natural teeth from things like coffee and red wine. It is important to schedule regular cleanings just like you would if all of your teeth were natural.

How long will my dental implants last?

With proper care and maintenance, your dental implants will last 25+ years! They really are the best “permanent” solution.

Are You a Good Candidate for Dental Implants?

Dental implants are a great option for people who are missing teeth, however, this doesn’t mean that everyone is a good candidate for getting them.

For starters, it is critical to have healthy teeth and gums, as well as an adequate amount of bone density that would be able to support the dental implant. If you do not have enough jawbone density, the dental implant may not be able to withstand pressure from chewing.

An alternative for someone who does not have enough jawbone would be to undergo a bone grafting procedure, whereby bone is taken from another part of your body and transplanted into your jaw.  Your oral surgeon would be able to tell you if this is a viable and/or necessary option.

If you have certain diseases, such as diabetes (not under control with medication) or some type of autoimmune disease, it could hinder your ability to heal.

If you have gum disease, it would need to be treated and under control before dental implants would even be an option. It goes without saying that treating gum disease needs to be a priority regardless if you need dental implants or not. Left untreated, gum disease can actually lead to tooth loss.

If you smoke, you would need to be willing and able to quit throughout the whole dental implant process.  That said, if you were able to quit for a long period of time, it would be a unfortunate to revert back to this bad habit, so this could be a good opportunity to improve your overall health at the same time.

Choose Dental Implants Over Dentures

Considering dental implants or wondering if you should just stick with dentures?  Aside from looking amazing, dental implants have many other key benefits that may help make your decision easier:

  • Great Look & Feel – if you want to have something that looks and feels like your actual teeth, dental implants are the right choice for you.
  • Confidence Booster – there is no doubt that you will have increased self-esteem and self-confidence if you choose dental implants. You will want to show off your smile – not hide it.
  • Permanence – dental implants are designed to fuse with the bone, so they become permanent, unlike dentures that you have to remove to clean and while you sleep.
  • Clearer Speech – if you have tried dentures, you know that they have the risk of slipping if they are poorly fitted. This can cause you to have slurred speech. You would not have this problem with dental implants. They are as close to permanent, real teeth as you can get.
  • Comfort – unlike dentures that are removable, implants feel like they are part of you. Also, food doesn’t get trapped in random places like with dentures.
  • Eat with Ease – dental implants function like real teeth, unlike dentures that have the potential to slip. You can bite normally and eat basically anything you want!
  • Better Oral Health – individual implants are easy to keep clean – just like normal teeth. No extra cleaning solutions are required.
  • Long-lasting – dental implants are super durable and can last a lifetime. Dentures, on the other hand, need to be replaced eventually.
